He Pua Kupaianaha Ko Ni’ihau

Kawaikapuokalani K. Hewett

This song is from a collection of Ni’ihau mele that I wrote in the early eighties when I would travel to Kauaÿi and perform for many celebrations held by Ni’ihau families.
The rest of the mele have been previously recorded. This is the last mele of that collection. He mahalo këia no Niÿihau.

He pua kupaianaha ko Ni’ihau
He uÿi i mili ÿ ia e ka ÿehukai

Ho’okahi ‘ike a lilo ‘oe
He ipo aloha na ka lei kahelelani
He lei mae ÿole, he lei makamae
He lei ola i nä kau a kau

Ua laha nä pua o nä moku e a’e
Kükahi Ni’ihau, lei i nä püpü

Me nä hökü ‘imo’imo i ka lani
Na püpü like ‘ole pae kahakai

I ‘ohi pä kahi i koho nani loa
I kui lei ‘ia e nä lima miki’oi

I puana ÿia me ke aloha
He pua kupaianaha ko Ni’ihau

Niÿihau has an amazing blossom
A beauty caressed by the sea spray

Just one glimpse and you will become
An admirer of the lei of Kahelelani shells
A lei that never wilts, a precious lei
A lei that lives forever

The other islands have flowers that are quite common
Niÿihau alone has the lei Kahelelani

Like the stars that twinkle in the skies
The many shells that land on the shores of Niÿihau

Gathered one by one, choosing the best
Sewn into a lei with deft hands

It is conclude with affection
Niÿihau has an amazing blossom
